History

Background

WHAT Foundation is a local non-profit organization based in Ghana, founded in 2014 and registered in 2016. With its head office in Wa and a sub-office in Sawla, the Foundation is dedicated to reducing poverty and vulnerability in rural communities, especially among women and youth, through training, advocacy, awareness creation, attitudinal change, and the promotion of indigenous economic opportunities. Its thematic focus includes Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs), sustainable and modernized agriculture, SME development, education, and health. Over the past decade, WHAT Foundation has supported over 450 VSLAs across the Upper West, Savannah, Bono, and parts of the North East Regions, benefiting approximately 12,900 members, 86% of whom are women. The Foundation has facilitated the mobilization of over GHS 10 million in group savings, linked around 400 groups to mainstream financial institutions, and helped 45 register as cooperatives. It has conducted training programs on organizational development, bee keeping, and financial literacy with partners such as GIZ/MOAP, Peace Corps-USA, and BUSAC Fund. Additionally, it supports smallholder farmers with tractor services, access to quality inputs, sustainable agriculture training, and market linkages. The Foundation also advocates for women’s access to productive land, supports shea nut mobilization and processing, and promotes rural enterprise development. To further enhance financial inclusion, it has established a Cooperative Credit Union with branches in Wa and Bulenga to provide affordable financial services to farmers and agribusiness actors. With a staff of 15 (12 men and 3 women) and 10 community volunteers, WHAT Foundation is committed to scaling up its operations and reaching more communities in Northern Ghana.
